Not a whole lot of places to choose from on a Wednesday night after 9:00pm, but we ended up roosting at Birdcall on the corner of Tutt & Dublin near Powers. The only change I saw from my last visit was that they no longer have you separate your trash into different recycle bins. I'm still not a fan of the way things are done in the order process inside, but I'm sure the drive-thru would be much better. Dave enjoyed his Chicken Sandwich (as did I my first visit), but Josh and I were not impressed with their "new" chicken nuggets. Maybe it's because we were there late and they weren't as fresh as they may normally be served. The dipping sauces were good, but my nephew said his diet soda tasted like flowers...the same thing I detected on my last visit, which is why I ordered the Arnold Palmer tea this time. We had a good time, which is what counts in the end. Stella was left in "Spot #26", once again feeling uncertain about whether or not she should be parked there or somewhere else, but every parking space in the parking lot is identified as a "Spot" with a pick up number on it. Oh well.
Birdcall 6510 Tutt Blvd. Colorado Springs, CO 80923 719.259.6290 An outstanding meal with awesome views and a gentle cool breeze from the upper patio. The Carne Asada Steak & Cheese Enchiladas were prepared to perfection!
Hacienda Colorado 5246 N. Nevada Ave. Colorado Springs, CO 80918 719.418.7999 So happy to have our local Joey’s Pizza open again after closing temporarily to remodel. Everything’s looking great and tasting awesome! Today we tried the Stromboli...oh my! It was made to perfection and so delicious! Stop in, say hello, and have a piece of NY right here in Colorado Springs at one of their three locations! 😋
Joey's Pizza 1843 Briargate Blvd. Colorado Springs, CO 80920 719.265.6922 Wow! The Chicken Marco (a Paravicini’s original) was not only great in taste, but in size too! This is one of the few meals I was unable to completely finish. The empty chair across from me is because Stella had to wait outside (as usual). She was hoping no one thought she was loitering! It’s just as well, she would just have been jealous of Ariel. Kudos to her for the awesome recommendation and service!
Paravicini's Italian Bistro 2802 W. Colorado Ave. Colorado Springs, CO 80904 719.471.8200 The New Day Cafe in Rockrimmon offers breakfast and lunch daily. Whether you're hankerin' eggs or pancakes, soup, salad, or a sandwich, they have a variety of selections sure to please everyone in your party. We chose the Tuna Manhattan, along with a side of house-made potato salad. Always tasty, clean, and comfortable.
New Day Cafe 5901 Delmonico Dr. Colorado Springs, CO 80919 719.266.0555 Always great food and service at Paninos, serving Colorado Springs since 1974. The Sausage & Peppers is an excellent choice for those who like a bit of spice to their meal. Two additional locations include downtown at 604 N. Tejon Street and the west side at 1721 S. 8th Street.
Paninos Eastside 3015 New Center Pt. Colorado Springs, CO 80922 719.380.2720 No reservation, but they managed to squeeze me in anyway! Excellent ribs, loaded garlic mashed potatoes, and carrot soufflé (the only way I'm eatin' carrots ever again!).
Colorado's Rib & Chop House 5935 Dublin Blvd. Colorado Springs, CO 80923 719.597.2510 Stella was a little jealous when I came out bragging about the awesome wrap Betsy made for me for lunch. I couldn’t resist a loaf of fresh-from-the-oven lemon-raspberry bread too! Yum! One of our favorite stops in Rockrimmon!
Oliver's Deli 6602 Delmonico Dr. Colorado Springs, CO 80919 719.599.9411 The long-awaited reopening of our beloved Cog Railway has finally arrived, making it's first public run beginning today, May 21, 2021. We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate them on their grand re-opening and wish them much success in the years ahead. To book your trip, click here.
Stella and I stopped by Leon Gessi’s for lunch. Discover some awesome daily specials! We had the house salad and the “Butcher Shop” specialty pizza, a meat lover’s (and our) favorite!
Leon Gessi's NY Pizza 1806 Palmer Park Blvd. Colorado Springs, CO 80909 719.635.1542 Always a delightful meal and excellent service at this local favorite. Rachel’s recommendation of the Pollo Frito was spot-on! Don’t forget to ask for the pineapple-habanero salsa for your chips!
Salsa Brava 5925 Dublin Blvd. Colorado Springs, CO 80923 719.591.6177 Nothing like some piping hot comfort food on a cool, damp evening. The Lasagna at Roman Villa was a perfect choice! That, coupled with a house salad and an order of fresh garlic bread topped with melted cheese and tomato made one terrific dinner! Family owned and operated since 1959!
Roman Villa 3005 N. Nevada Avenue Colorado Springs, CO 80907 Had a good time catching up with a friend from Chicago yesterday, and a great place to do that is Bourbon Brothers Smokehouse, next to Bass Pro Shop in Northgate. Our selections included the Jambalaya, Smoked Hot Wings and the Burnt Ends Chili. While we were there it hailed outside. Needless to say, Stella was beside herself. What can we do? That’s springtime in the Rockies!
Bourbon Brothers Smokehouse 13021 Bass Pro Drive Colorado Springs, CO 80921 719.219.1830 So a few weeks ago Stella and I are headed north on I-25 and spot a British flag atop the former Trappers Rendezvous restaurant on Corporate Drive. At first we thought it was someone that had placed it there to honor the recent death of Prince Philip. Come to find out that the building is now occupied by The Great British Food Company, owned by the same folks at The Chippy Fish ‘N’ Chips on Austin Bluffs, just west of Academy. What amazed us more was to learn they’ve been open since August of 2020! The fish (two pieces) was great and nicely cooked. The menu says it is served with “twice-fried British style chips”, which sounded awesome, but appeared to be just plain old, what we Americans refer to as, french fries. The slaw was a bit salty and served at room temperature, so was a concern to me if it had mayo in it. The price for the dinner was $20, two dollars more than the $18 shown on the on-line menus. They advertise they now serve breakfast, opening at 7:30am. Breakfast and dinner traffic from the nearby hotels could be a great niche if they really want it to be. After over 8 months they still have not changed the sign facing the freeway, but hopefully they will make it one that really catches the eye of those speeding by, something the previous occupants failed to do. It’s such a beautiful building with sensational outdoor seating areas and views as well. We wish them much success as things begin returning somewhat normal.
The Great British Food Co. 5905 Corporate Drive Colorado Springs, CO 80919 719.598.2802 There’s nothing like buttermilk for breakfast...I mean breakfast AT Buttermilk! They’re right neighborly-like to the Bass Pro Shop at Northgate.
Buttermilk Breakfast Eatery 13141 Bass Pro Dr. Colorado Springs, CO 80921 719.309.9840 When you have that urge to be by the water, nearby Monument Lake might just do. A little Wisconsin right here in Colorado Springs! What a "grate" place to pick up some snacks for yourself or a gift for someone special. A true cheese lovers paradise!
Cheese Haus 1380 S. 21st Street Colorado Springs, CO 80904 719.339-7521 Enjoy breakfast or lunch at Susie’s Westside Cafe on 21st Street. After hiking all morning I decided to try the Kitchen Sink Omelette. You guessed it, it has everything in it “except the kitchen sink”. My photo blurred out the omelette 🤨 but it looked and tasted awesome! It was a pleasure meeting Susie and hearing her conversing with her regulars. They are currently constructing a patio on the front of the building which will give them much more seating. While you're there, be sure to get yourself (or someone special) a jar of Susie's delicious homemade preserves.
Susie's Westside Cafe 1686 S. 21st Street Colorado Springs, CO 80904 719.442.0090 What a great day to be outdoors! We decided to stop at Rainbow Falls and walk the trail. Parking is limited, but if you wait a few minutes, one generally becomes available pretty quick. Currently the trail is only open on Saturdays and Sundays. They are across the street (US Highway 24) from the entrance to the Manitou Cliff Dwellings and down the hill to the right pn Serpentine Drive. Rainbow Falls US Highway 24 at Serpentine Drive Cascade, CO 80809 719.520.7529 What a great afternoon for a hike at Bear Creek Regional Park and visit to the Nature Center. We took the “Songbird Trail”. A quick stop at Wimberger’s German Bakery today had me checking out this classic Thunderbird. Stella was quite jealous, I must say!
Wimberger's Old World Bakery & Deli 2321 Bott Ave. Colorado Springs, CO 80904 719.634.6313 Awesome Chicken Fried Steak dinners are available every Friday night at JVR, along with the traditional Fried Chicken or Ham. Ours were cooked to perfection and SO delicious! All meals are served family-style, with seconds included! The ranch is celebrating their 70th year! Reservations are recommended.
Juniper Valley Ranch 16350 CO-115 Colorado Springs, CO 80926 719.576.0741 The “La Mexicana” chimichanga at Mamitas Family Mexican Restaurant located at Powers and South Carefree. Carne Asada smothered in queso sauce and pico de gallo. The fajitas looked good. I wonder what happened to the train that used to ride on a track along the ceiling in this building that’s been home to several different restaurants since it opened.
Mamitas Family Mexican Restaurant 3020 New Center Point Colorado Springs, CO 80922 719.596.5200 Perhaps I could “wing” it going through the drive-thru, but we found EVERY parking space to be designated as a curbside pick up spot, so Stella and I were confused as to where those of us dining inside were supposed to park. Already tired after a long day at work, I was forced to use a touch-screen kiosk (and my brain) to place my order (in the midst of Covid germs) AFTER first scanning my cc. Then I’m instructed to go to the large screen on the wall (which has everyone’s name in plain view on it) and wait there (about 10 minutes) or watch the screen from your table until it tells you which hole (bay) your food is in. The diet “kola” tastes like flowers...the cherry selection is much better. My deluxe sandwich and tater tots were tasty enough. The seat had a bunch of throw pillows on it, and I kept feeling like I was going to accidentally knock one onto the floor. You can play an arcade game while you wait. When it’s time to leave, you need to be focused and alert as you sort each item of trash into the proper recycle bins. Since they are Colorado based, “hatched in Denver”, I wanted to give them a try, but next time I think I’ll stick to the drive-thru. You’ll find this BirdCall at Dublin and Tutt, just east of Powers.
